For lead follow-up, consider AgentLine when an existing agent or application needs a phone number, hosted outbound calls and transcripts through REST or MCP. Consider Retell when its call configuration and handoff features match your sales process. A useful comparison measures correct outcomes and integrations, rather than declaring a winner from a short demo.
This comparison is published by AgentLine. Documentation was reviewed on October 18, 2026; it is not a head-to-head performance benchmark.
Compare the workflow
- Starting a call: AgentLine uses POST /v1/calls with agent_id and to_number. Retell documents a create-phone-call API with from_number and to_number. Both require account and number setup before a real call.
- Conversation: AgentLine's hosted agent follows the approved prompt; your external runtime supplies explicit lookups or tasks through a persistent integration.
- Human escalation: AgentLine supports transfer to the configured owner. Retell offers dedicated transfer modes; inspect the owner-transfer guide for the exact distinction.
- CRM completion: Require a confirmed write to your CRM. A transcript saying the lead was saved is not evidence that the integration ran.
- Costs: Compare the full call configuration, number rental, integrations and billable failures using the same workload.
Set up the AgentLine evaluation
Create a test agent and number through the REST API walkthrough. Use a lead record containing only the information needed for the test: name, reason for the requested callback, approved contact number, and the goal of the conversation. Keep the key in a server-side secret.
Start with a prompt that asks one qualification question at a time, respects a request to end the call, and never invents a price or booking. Supply a full per-call system_prompt when contextualizing a call; it replaces the agent's saved prompt. Include the same escalation and outcome rules each time.
For CRM lookups during the conversation, connect a persistent service. Return concise facts or confirmed task results to hosted voice. If the CRM is unavailable, collect a callback request without claiming the record was updated. Use call.completed to trigger post-call processing, and deduplicate repeated deliveries before creating activities.
Run the same scenarios on both products
- Use your own test phones and fictional leads with the same prompt goals and account permissions.
- Test an interested lead, a wrong number, a request to stop, voicemail or no answer, and a request for a human.
- Verify the call outcome against the transcript and the actual CRM record. Check that one call produces one activity.
- Measure time from approved call request to ringing separately from conversational response delay. Record configuration and sample size.
- Compare total cost per correctly completed outcome, including failed attempts, rather than just the headline minute rate.
We have not run that comparative trial here. Do not infer conversion lift, setup-time superiority, or latency superiority from this guide. A reasonable acceptance criterion is zero invented commitments and a correctly recorded outcome for every test case before scaling traffic.
Pricing and next steps
AgentLine's published usage rates are $2.00/month per number, $0.10/minute for calls (per-second after a one-minute minimum; zero-second calls are free), and $0.02 per inbound SMS. Check pricing and your account's allowances before budgeting. Runtime hosting and external integrations can add costs.
Use Retell's current pricing for the configuration you test. Begin with the GTM agent template and compare the broader AgentLine, Retell, Vapi and Bland guide if your requirements extend beyond follow-up calls.
