How Much Does It Cost to Give an AI Agent a Phone Number?

6 min read

By Sameer Srivastava

Giving an AI agent a phone number on AgentLine costs $20 a month to start. The Individual plan includes one US or Canada number, 100 call minutes and 400 texts. Beyond the plan, calls are $0.12 a minute, texts are $0.02 each, sent or received, and each extra number is $3.00 a month. The same number makes and receives calls and texts.

The Rates

  • Individual: $20/month with 1 US/CA number, 100 minutes and 400 texts
  • Scale: $50/month with 3 US/CA numbers, 200 minutes and 1,000 texts
  • Startup: $200/month with 12 US/CA numbers, 1000 minutes and 3,000 texts
  • Extra US or Canada numbers: $3.00/month each
  • Calls beyond the plan: $0.12/minute, inbound and outbound, billed per second after a one-minute minimum
  • A call that never connects (0 seconds) is free
  • Texts beyond the plan: $0.02 each, sent or received
  • Yearly billing: 10% off the monthly price, same monthly allowances

How a Call Is Billed

A connected call counts as at least one minute. After the first minute it is billed by the second. A 30-second call counts as one minute; a 90-second call counts as 1.5 minutes. Calls first use the minutes included in your plan, and only minutes beyond that are charged at the per-minute rate.

Worked Examples

Each example assumes two-minute calls and picks the cheapest plan for that usage:

  • One agent, light use (1 number, 100 minutes, 200 texts): cheapest is Individual plan $20.00 = $20.00/month. Next cheapest: Scale at $50.00.
  • One agent, 300 minutes (1 number, 300 minutes, 300 texts): cheapest is Individual plan $20.00 + $24.00 for 200 minutes beyond the plan = $44.00/month. Next cheapest: Scale at $62.00.
  • Three agents, 1,000 minutes, 800 texts (3 numbers, 1,000 minutes, 800 texts): cheapest is Individual plan $20.00 + $6.00 for extra numbers + $108.00 for 900 minutes beyond the plan + $8.00 for 400 texts beyond the plan = $142.00/month. Next cheapest: Scale at $146.00.
  • Ten agents, 2,000 minutes, 3,000 texts (10 numbers, 2,000 minutes, 3,000 texts): cheapest is Startup plan $200.00 + $120.00 for 1,000 minutes beyond the plan = $320.00/month. Next cheapest: Individual at $327.00.

The cheapest plan depends on how many numbers and texts you need, not only minutes. The pricing calculator compares every plan for your own usage.

What the Price Includes

  • A real US or Canada number that makes and receives calls and sends and receives SMS
  • The hosted voice conversation: speech-to-text, the voice, turn-taking and call control
  • Transcripts for every call, and events delivered to your relay or webhook
  • Access through the agent skill, the MCP server or the REST API

Not included: the LLM runtime or other services your own agent uses during or after a call, which bill separately.

Compared With Building It Yourself

You can assemble the same thing from telephony building blocks. As listed on Twilio's US pricing pages on 2026-10-25, a local number is $1.15/month, outbound calls are $0.014/minute and inbound calls $0.0085/minute, ConversationRelay (its managed speech layer) adds $0.07/minute, and SMS is $0.0083 per segment plus carrier fees and A2P 10DLC registration. You then pay separately for the LLM, and you build and run the call handling, prompts, transcripts and event delivery yourself.

Per minute, raw building blocks can come out cheaper at high volume. The difference is the engineering time and the system you maintain. If your agent needs to make and take calls this week, a hosted line is usually the cheaper start; if voice is your core product and you have a team for it, building on primitives can make sense. How to Keep the Bill Down

  • Start on Individual and move up only when the calculator says another plan is cheaper.
  • Keep calls short: one goal per call, short replies, and a clear end.
  • Use a text instead of a call for confirmations and reminders that don't need a conversation.
  • Unanswered calls are free, so retry logic costs nothing until someone picks up.
