Can Grok Bot Make Phone Calls? Built-in Calling, Dial Bot, and a Number of Its Own

6 min read

By Sameer Srivastava

Yes, Grok Bot can make phone calls. Since version 0.77 (October 2026), it can dial a person or business for you, wait on hold, press keys in a phone menu, and send you a summary when the call ends. If you want Grok Bot to have its own phone number that people can call back and text, connect a phone provider. With AgentLine that takes one prompt: "Read https://agentline.cloud/skill.md and set yourself up with an AgentLine phone number."

This guide covers the three ways Grok Bot can use a phone today, what each one costs, and how to set up the one that fits.

What Is Grok Bot?

Grok Bot is xAI's AI teammate app for macOS, Windows and iOS. Each bot works on a persistent cloud computer: it signs in to your tools, runs routines on a schedule, and keeps working when your laptop is closed. You extend it with skills and with templates from the Grok Bot Marketplace. That design matters for phone calls: Grok Bot can read a provider's docs, store an API key in its Vault, and wire up the phone line itself.

Option 1: Grok Bot's Built-in Calling

On October 25, 2026, Elon Musk announced that Grok Bot can call someone or a business for you, make a request, take notes and send you a summary. The 0.77 release added a live transcript you can watch while the bot dials, waits on hold, presses keys and gets transferred.

Use it for one-off errands: checking opening hours, asking about a reservation, chasing a delivery. It is calling on your behalf. It does not give the bot a dedicated number that people can call back, text, or reach at 3 a.m.

Option 2: The Dial Bot Template (Bland AI)

The Grok Bot Marketplace has a dial bot template that places outbound calls through Bland AI. On first use it asks for a Bland API key and a voice, then dials when you ask. Bland's Agent Phone Plan is $14.99 for the first month and $29.99/month after that. It includes one US number and unlimited US and Canada calling and texting under fair-use limits: one call at a time, 50 calls a day and 100 texts a day (Bland's page, checked October 30, 2026).

Option 3: Give Grok Bot Its Own Number with AgentLine

AgentLine gives Grok Bot a dedicated US or Canada number that works in both directions:

  • Outbound calls: Grok Bot starts the call, AgentLine's hosted voice agent holds the conversation, and Grok Bot reads the transcript afterward.
  • Inbound calls: the hosted agent answers 24/7, even while Grok Bot's computer sleeps, and saves a transcript for the bot to act on.
  • Two-way SMS: inbound texts arrive as sms.received events, and Grok Bot sends texts with POST /v1/messages.
  • Tools: the AgentLine MCP server exposes calls, numbers and transcripts as tools Grok Bot can use with your approval.

How to Set It Up (About 5 Minutes)

  1. Create an account at agentline.cloud and copy your API key. Your first number starts a 7-day free trial.
  2. Send Grok Bot this prompt: "Read https://agentline.cloud/skill.md and set yourself up with an AgentLine phone number. Ask me for the API key in a secure prompt, never in chat. Confirm the cost with me before you buy the number."
  3. Paste the key into the secure prompt or the Vault when Grok Bot asks for it.
  4. Approve the number purchase. Pick an area code close to the people the bot will call.
  5. Test on your own phone: "Call me at +1... and tell me you're set up." Then ask Grok Bot to read you the transcript.

The Grok Bot setup guide has the MCP config and the relay command for routing live calls through Grok Bot's own context.

What It Costs

AgentLine plans start at $20/month and include a US or Canada number, 100 call minutes and 400 texts. Beyond the plan, calls are $0.12/min, billed per second after a one-minute minimum, texts are $0.02 each, and extra numbers are $3/month. A Grok Bot that makes 50 two-minute calls a month stays inside the $20 plan. At 300 minutes a month, the bill is $20 + 200 x $0.12 = $44. See pricing for the larger plans.

Which Option Should You Use?

  • Occasional errands you watch live: Grok Bot's built-in calling.
  • Outbound calls on a flat monthly price, one at a time: the Bland dial bot.
  • A number the bot owns, inbound calls answered around the clock, two-way texts, and transcripts your other agents can read: AgentLine.

Rules Worth Writing Down First

An AI caller will fill any gap in its instructions, so put these in the prompt before the first real call:

  • Say it is an AI assistant calling on your behalf, and never claim to be human.
  • Confirm the number and the goal with you before dialing.
  • Stop calling anyone who asks, and never call emergency services.
  • Call your own phone first and ask it directly whether it is a bot.

US law treats AI voices as artificial voices for telemarketing, so cold calls to consumers need prior consent. The AI cold calling guide covers the rules.
